Maintenance Tips and Parts for Overused Appliances

The number one reason most of our customers come to us is that a part on their appliance – whether it’s a washer, dryer, refrigerator, air conditioner or other household mainstay appliance – has failed or broken down or is performing less efficiently, needs replacement appliance parts.

Nice out of ten times the machine is at fault. Most modern appliances are built with a lifespan of around 8-10 years of operating efficiency, then they start to show signs of wear and tear and that’s when customers come to us for appliance repair and appliance parts. Breakdown of appliances and parts may happen ever sooner if you have a family of busy parents and children, when washers and dryers are used daily, and refrigerators and freezer doors get opened and closed more frequently than a single person’s residence.

But of course, like so many things, if you do a little basic maintenance for your appliances, like you might do for your cars, bicycles and back yards, you will see the appliances likely lasting longer.

Some of the basic tips for maintaining certain appliances around the home are listed below.

Refrigerators & Freezers:

  • Clean the condenser coils regularly. By vacuuming the condenser coils, you are helping ease the load on your refrigerator power and will help your fridge run more efficiently. Some models have built-in coils, however. If this is the case, you might require a service call.
  • Check the seal on both refrigerator and freezer doors. Your refrigerator and freezer will not keep food properly chilled if the seals are not tight. Plus, you’re losing efficiency. Try closing the door on a thin sheet of paper. If the paper slips, it’s time to get a new seal.

Washer & Dryer Machines:

  • Inspect the hoses connected to the outlets
  • Doublecheck the dryer vent and the hose that connects to the outer wall

We’ll provide more tips for your other household appliances in an upcoming blog post.
